Large Installations - Policano Residence
This project included not only the re-covering of walls on all sides of an existing suburban house, but also the entry sequence, the sculptural retainer walls along the driveway and in both front and back yards, and a freestanding yard sculpture/planter.
The curves are inspired by water shaping sand at the seashore. The client, who is a water sign, chose the mosaic tiles for their aquatic character.
The serpentine walls of the front entry yard lead you through a Japanese gateway towards the back yard.
A primary feature in the back is a large planter that grows into a ferrocement sculpture whose shape is reminiscent of the surfacing tails of sea creatures.
Wherever I could find enough space, I would introduce gentle waves, graceful wrinkles, and low relief curves to the new plaster work to create tension, interest, and references to things aquatic.
A serpentine wall along the driveway leads up to a platform with a large vessel.
