Originally built for the Ladybird Wildflower Center's annual Fortlandia competition, my Fairy Pavilion won that year's People's Choice Award and was then bough by the City of Austin to be relocated to Walnut Creek Park.
Over 100 Ash Junipers (an invasive specie in the Hill Country) went into the construction of this multi-roofed, multi-leveled pagoda.
The ground level beneath the main floor is broken periodically by fixed branched cedar trunks to create a “Briar Patch”-like crawling maze, which extends under the meandering wheelchair-friendly entry ramp. The 3’ high main level is surrounded by a perimeter of inverted branched trunks to deter falls and provide safe climbing. The third level is the central lookout, a climbing chimney of more branched trunks with foot-rungs. At the top are 3 lookout windows and 6 green skylights.
The peak is a small pagoda-like roof that hovers above the main multi-roof structure, all of which are clad in colorful aluminum can shingles to create a flower-like canopy.
