Large Installations - Austin Center for Battered Women
This was the first center in the US specifically designed and built to shelter battered women, and was featured on 60 Minutes as soon as it opened.
Working with Powell Nurseries and many other community businesses and organizations, I developedan exterior scheme to surround the building. The entry sequence, which included painted floral designs, a stone walk with a mosaic inset flanked by crepe myrtles, and grassy berms with a built-in stone and mosaic bench, was designed to welcome visitors and put them at ease.
The commons area at the exit leading to the backyard was a large patterned brick patio with a brightly painted raised performance stage. It was surrounded by stone and mosaic benches built into large hills, a stone and brick barbecue, a porch swing, and paths leading to play areas beyond.
Overhead was a wisteria trellis and a fiberglass roof in the shape of a giant dragonfly.
Beyond the commons area and wrapping around the sides of the building was an extensive playscape. It had several multi-entranced ferrocement tunnels covered by earth hills, a tryke track with tunnel, climbing apparatus, a donated VW bug, a 2-tiered tire swing, sand play, wood decks, and various bridges, some of which moved in different ways. There was also a play court painted up to resemble a huge game board.
